Hot Match!!! The Englishmen and the Dutch will meet at Wembley for the first time since that game in Euro '96, when the hosts enjoyed a thoroughly convincing 4-1 win. Fast forward to 2012 and the two teams meet under vastly different situations.
In the game in 1996, Alan Shearer scored twice (a penalty in the 22nd minute and a 57th minute strike) and Teddy Sheringham also hit a brace, in the 51st and 62nd minute. The battered Dutch could only manage a consolation goal in the 78th minute via Patrick Kluivert.
The game marks the first (and probably the last) time Stuart Pearce will be managing the senior England side. There has been a lot of controversy around the England team of late, and the managerial vacancy doesn’t help either, but it does a great job of lowering expectations amongst the media and if there’s one thing each and every ex-player has commented on, it’s the intense media scrutiny that gets to the players when they’re on England duty.
